Physical Property Definitions


The relative resistance of a material's surface to indentation by an indentor of specified dimensions under a specified load. Numerical hardness values represent either depth of penetration or convenient arbitrary units derived from depth of penetration. The hardness of elastomers is measured in the SHORE A and D scales, according to DIN 53505

Tensile Properties

Tensile properties are a measure of the force necessary to stretch a plastic and the percentage of stretching the plastic can withstand before breaking. Measurements are conducted according to DIN 53504.

  • Tensile modulus indicates the amount of force necessary to elongate a sample by, say, 100% and 300% of its original length.
  • Ultimate tensile strength is the maximum stress a material withstands at the point of rupture.
  • Elongation at break is the total elongation of a sample at the point of rupture.

Tear Strength

Tear resistance is the force per unit of thickness required to initiate and propagate a tear in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the applied stress. It is measured according to DIN 53515

DIN Abrasion

This measures the resistance of a material to wearing away by contact with a rotating abrasive cylinder of a specified coarseness, under a specified load. It is measured according to DIN 53516

Compression Set

In this test the specimen is compressed by 20% or 25% of its original thickness (depending on hardness) and subjected to specified temperatures for specified times, e.g. 22 hrs @ 70ºC. The compression set figure is the difference between the original thickness of the specimen and the thickness after testing, expressed as a percentage of the original deflection employed.

Please Note: Eurothane carries out its physical property evaluation on specimens which have been dry heat annealed for 16 hours at 100ºC.
